Project MMMONK – Biekorf Bibliotheek Brugge
Use case art scanning

Project description
Objective
Scenario
The MMMONK project focused on the digitization of 450 medieval manuscripts stored at two locations in Brugge:
- Openbare Bibliotheek Brugge (OBB),
- Grootseminarie Brugge (GSB),
Given the valuable and fragile nature of the manuscripts, Youston Group developed a tailored solution to digitize the manuscripts “in situ” while adhering to the highest digitization standards. This required designing a custom-built book scanner that could handle these delicate manuscripts according to the Metamorfoze Light Standard, ensuring both preservation and quality.
The process involved:
- Custom Scanner Development:
A custom scanner was designed and built specifically for this project to meet the Metamorfoze Standard, ensuring gentle handling of the manuscripts.
- On-Site Digitization:
Two specialized Youston Group operators performed on-site scanning at both locations in Brugge.Library staff supported the process by managing damage registration and ensuring proper handling of the manuscripts.
- Daily Calibration and Quality Control:
Equipment was calibrated daily, including analyzing and adjusting using calibrated targets, to maintain consistent image quality.Scanning was performed at 300 ppi in color with an ICC profile, producing uncompressed TIFF master copies and JPEG use copies.
- Metadata Creation and File Management:
Metadata such as file name, digitization date, operator, format, file size, checksum, equipment, post-processing steps, and copyright were added to ensure accessibility and proper management of the collection.Images were stored on external hard drives for transfer to the library’s servers.
Challenges and Solutions
-
1. Fragile and Valuable Materials
Challenge
Manuscripts, dating from the 7th to 15th centuries, were highly fragile and unsuitable for standard scanning techniques.Solution
Youston Group designed a custom-built book scanner specifically for this project, enabling safe digitization while preserving the integrity of the manuscripts. -
2. In Situ Digitization
Challenge
Due to the sensitive nature of the manuscripts, digitization had to be performed at their storage locations.Solution
Specialized operators from Youston Group worked on-site at both locations in Brugge, ensuring the process met strict handling and quality standards. -
3. Consistent Image Quality
Challenge
High-quality digitization required adherence to the Metamorfoze Light Standard, demanding daily calibration and quality control.Solution
Equipment was calibrated every day, with results analyzed and adjustments made as needed to maintain consistent quality. -
4. File Management and Metadata
Challenge
Managing and organizing files for accessibility required robust metadata and naming conventions.Solution
Metadata, including file names, digitization details, and technical specifications, was systematically added, ensuring proper organization and accessibility for future use.
