Project MMMONK – Biekorf Bibliotheek Brugge

Use case art scanning

Project description

Objective

Digitization of medieval monastic manuscripts as part of the MMMONK project, funded by the Flemish Government, to preserve and provide digital access to valuable manuscripts from the 7th to 15th centuries.

Scenario

The MMMONK project focused on the digitization of 450 medieval manuscripts stored at two locations in Brugge:

  • Openbare Bibliotheek Brugge (OBB),
  • Grootseminarie Brugge (GSB),

Given the valuable and fragile nature of the manuscripts, Youston Group developed a tailored solution to digitize the manuscripts “in situ” while adhering to the highest digitization standards. This required designing a custom-built book scanner that could handle these delicate manuscripts according to the Metamorfoze Light Standard, ensuring both preservation and quality.

The process involved:

  1. Custom Scanner Development:
A custom scanner was designed and built specifically for this project to meet the Metamorfoze Standard, ensuring gentle handling of the manuscripts.
  1. On-Site Digitization:
Two specialized Youston Group operators performed on-site scanning at both locations in Brugge.Library staff supported the process by managing damage registration and ensuring proper handling of the manuscripts.
  1. Daily Calibration and Quality Control:
Equipment was calibrated daily, including analyzing and adjusting using calibrated targets, to maintain consistent image quality.Scanning was performed at 300 ppi in color with an ICC profile, producing uncompressed TIFF master copies and JPEG use copies.
  1. Metadata Creation and File Management:
Metadata such as file name, digitization date, operator, format, file size, checksum, equipment, post-processing steps, and copyright were added to ensure accessibility and proper management of the collection.Images were stored on external hard drives for transfer to the library’s servers.
